CONTROL Resonant Laundromat Puzzle Solution

The Wear’Em & Wash’Em laundromat in Central hides a seven-row washing-machine puzzle. Each digit on the note is a machine state: 1 on, 0 off.

Quick Solution

Set the rows to 0001000 / 001100 / 100001 / 000000 / 000000 / 000000 / 100000. Six machines should be running; the rear break-room wall then opens toward the basement.

The first row is the long left-wall bank. The next four rows are the two faces of the center islands. The final two rows are separate sections of the right wall. Count physical machine positions even if a unit is out of order.

If your code matches but the passage stays closed, check the last row first. Confirm which end of that machine bank corresponds to the first digit on the note before changing anything else.

Where the Laundromat Is

Look for the blue Wear’Em & Wash’Em sign in Central, around the large plaza east of the Field Office. The storefront can be blocked by floating debris attached to red Hiss growths.

Follow the red tendrils away from the door and destroy the growths at their ends. Once the barrier clears, enter and read the Laundry Puzzle notice or While You Wait note on the rear bulletin board. The note provides the binary rows rather than a button sequence.

The entrance barrier and the washer code are separate gates. If you cannot enter, solve the exterior growth problem. If you are already inside but the basement is closed, work on machine states. This distinction prevents you from searching the street for a second key.

Read the Seven-Row Note

Treat each line as one horizontal bank or island face, in room order from the left wall toward the right. A 1 means switch the corresponding washer on; a 0 means leave it off.

The island faces count as separate rows even though they share a physical structure. The right wall is also divided into front and rear sections by a pillar. Reading the note as seven vertical stacks or as seven rooms gives the wrong layout.

Broken or out-of-order units still occupy a numbered position. Do not compress a row by ignoring one. The puzzle is about the state of the whole physical arrangement, including machines that cannot be switched.

Step-by-Step Laundromat Solution

Stand at the main entrance and orient yourself before touching any controls. Read the machine banks from left to right across the room.

No master lever is needed once the states are right. Walk to the back and look for the opened passage. The solution depends on the final on/off pattern, not the order in which you flipped individual machines. You can correct a mistaken switch without restarting the whole puzzle.

  1. Clear the doorway. Destroy the Hiss growths connected to the floating debris outside.
  2. Set the left wall. Turn on only the middle machine in the seven-unit bank.
  3. Set both faces of the left island. On the outer face, activate the middle pair; on the aisle face, activate the two ends.
  4. Silence the right island and rear wall. Rows four, five and six contain only zeros.
  5. Set the front right wall. Turn on only the first position indicated by row seven, leaving its other five units off.
  6. Enter the opened break room. Go through the newly revealed rear wall and take the stairs down.

Why This Pattern Works

The note is a compact map of binary states. A seven-digit row describes seven physical positions; a six-digit row describes six. The code maps to washer banks, not to a timed rhythm.

Rows four through six being all zero is easy to overlook. Players often activate a nearby washer while exploring and later forget to switch it off. Check the lamps or running sound of every machine on the right island and back wall.

There are six 1s in the full note. If seven or more washers are active, the rear passage cannot open. A quick recount is often faster than rereading every digit: one on the left wall, two on the left island’s outer face, two on its aisle face, and one on the right-wall front section.

Common Mistakes and Reward

The last row is easy to misread if you count machines from the opposite end of the bank. Recheck its first digit against the note before changing the other rows.

The opened staircase leads to a basement shelter. Open the Third Ice chest for a Health Upgrade Point. The basement also counts as a Secret Hideout location, a different completion objective from the washer interaction itself.

If you came looking for an altered camera, note that another laundromat appears in the Unknown zone during Freeze Frame. That camera route and the Central washer puzzle are different activities.

  • Count out-of-order machines as positions even though they cannot be activated.
  • Check both faces of each center island separately.
  • Keep the entire right island and rear right wall off.
  • For row seven, match the first slot of the six-position code and keep the other five off.
